November...and it's almost baby time!

We have been busy in November!

In reading/social studies we have been learning about culture! The students have learned that people can be alike and different, that there are different culture groups within our community (Woodstock), that these different culture groups may have different customs and traditions (food, art, music, clothing, holidays), and that by appreciating and respecting other cultures allows us to better understand who we are as a country.  We read several stories about children from different cultures (Anthony Reynoso: Born to Rope, and Abuela) Next week we will will read Chinatown.

The last two weeks we read our social studies unit called Learn About People where we read about heritage, different holidays, and expressions of culture. We learned about explorers, immigrants, and pioneers. We read Long Way to a New Land and The Long Way Westward. Both books were about a little boy, Carl Erik, whose family left Sweden and emigrated to America. Then once in America their family traveled westward from New York to Minnesota. The students really loved listening to his family's journey.

In spelling we are continuing to learn long a patterns. Next week we will work on the long i!

In math we are finishing our mini place value unit. Next week we will start double digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping. That unit will continue until almost winter break.

In other news...it is ALMOST baby time! Our baby girl (with still no name) is due November 24th but everyday I feel like we are getting closer and closer to her arrival! It really could be any day now! Mrs. Hopkins will be our teacher while I am gone. She has subbed several times for me and has gotten to know our class and routine! She will be great! She will be in contact with you once I am gone. I will miss the kids a TON while I am gone but I am also excited about the new addition to our family. I will be sure to email you the news with some pictures of course and plan to come visit soon with the baby! The kids will love that! I will return after 12 weeks.

If I am not here.....HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Love, Mrs. Eaheart

October is almost over!

Another busy month of school is flying by!

In reading we are starting to read some stories about characters from different cultures in order to get ourselves ready for our next social studies unit. This week we read a story about a little boy who lives in a busy city. He sits on his front steps and drums the different sounds that he hears around him. We learned that those sound words are called onomatopoeia. We found many examples in our story.

In spelling we spent this week reviewing the first 6 lessons. Next week we will start lesson 7- long vowel words with the magic e at the end.

In math we have been learning about picture and bar graphs. Next week we will learn about line plots and then end the week with a test. We will move on to 2 digit addition.

HALLOWEEN PARTY- we will have our class party next Friday, 10/31 after lunch from 12-12:45. We will probably only have time to eat some snacks, drink some juice, and maybe listen to a Halloween story. We have one healthy snack and juice boxes being sent in. If you would like to also send in a healthy snack or some treats please let me know. We have 27 students.

RED RIBBON WEEK- next week is Red Ribbon Week. Don't forget to wear PJ's on Monday,  a sports shirt on Tuesday, red on Wednesday, a hat on Thursday, and spirit wear or Mary Endres colors (blue and grey) on Friday.

Welcome October!

September really flew by! I guess time really does fly when you are having fun!

In reading we read a story called Ruby the Copycat. The kids just loved this story! It was about a little girl who copied other people. At the end of the story she learned to just be herself! We continued working on filling out a story map about Ruby the Copycat. We also practiced reading the story as a reader's theater. Then we read a Henry and Mudge story and talked about fall. Students chose their favorite season and wrote about it. This week we read a story called The Enormous Turnip. It tied in nicely with our nutrition unit since we just learned about vegetables. We got to read the story as a reader's theater again. The kids loved it!  Here's a picture of them reading in groups.

In spelling lessons 1-6 teach short vowel patterns. We have learned about blends (str, br, gl), h brother digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh), qu, k and ck, x, and this week plurals with es. The students love playing sparkle in our class to practice their words.

In grammar this week we learned that a noun is a person, place, thing, or an animal.

In math we are continuing to measure using inches and centimeters. We also talk about meters (100cm.) and yards (36in. or 3 ft.). We are also working on story problems that involve measurements. We will finish this measurement math unit next week with a  test on Wednesday. Then we will work on a short 2 week unit on graphs!

In science we have been learning a lot about nutrition! The kids are really loving hearing the stories of Little D and the Royal Food Family who is helping him get healthy by learning about the 5 food groups. We have learned about all 5 food groups (milk, meat, vegetable, fruit, and grain). Students need to know foods that belong to the group, as well as how each food group helps our body. We learned that milk group provides calcium, which helps build strong bones and teeth. We learned that the meat group provides protein, which helps build strong muscles. We learned that the vegetable group provides vitamin A, which helps us to see in the dark. We learned that the fruit group foods are a good source of Vitamin C, which helps heal cuts and bruises on our skin. This week we learned that the grain group gives us the "get up and go" energy we need each day.  We will also learn about the "others group" which includes special treats and junk food, we will talk about how to plan healthy meals that include all 5 food groups, we will meet a chef from Woodstock North HS, and we will end with a test so keep reviewing what your child is learning!

In writing, we write everyday! On Monday's we always write about our weekends and on Friday's we always write our letter to you about our week at school (don't forget to always write back please)! The rest of the week we have been writing about what we are learning about...nutrition! The students learned how to write opinion pieces and wrote which food is their favorite from each food group and why. We keep all our writing in a writing binder here at school. We go back to our writing pieces occasionally to add, edit, finish, read, and share with a partner or the class. At the end of the year, the students will have a nice writing portfolio and they love seeing how much they grow as a writer from August until May!

Small groups, centers, daily 5..... students are reading in small groups with myself or our HS intern, Miss Janely, each week. Some students are also in another small reading group with our reading teacher in the building, Mrs. Clegg. When students are not reading with a teacher, they are practicing spelling or grammar, finishing unfinished work, reading to self, taking reading counts quizzes, doing xtramath, or playing on educational apps on our ipads.

Sight words... don't forget that your child's sight word envelope needs to stay in their HW folder everyday. We have moms (and a grandma :) ) coming in during the week to pull out students in the hall to quiz them on their sight word list. They need to read and spell all 10 words correctly in order to move on to the next list. If they got any wrong, they practice writing the word 5 times with the mom helper and will bring the same list home to practice some more with you.

Conferences... I am looking forward to meeting with all of you either Wednesday or Thursday next week! Remember students are off Thursday-Monday after conferences.

Have a good weekend!

Oh forgot one thing....since next week we only have school 2 1/2 days we will NOT be sending home a reading log and homework. We will also not be starting a new spelling list until after conferences! Enjoy an easy week next week!

Busy First Month of School

We have had a busy first month of school! I think that we have had a great start! We have a great group of kids this year! I look forward to our year together!

First, I want to say that the students, for the most part, are doing a great job with their daily reading log, fluency page, and homework! Thank you for helping them each night! It is so important to dedicate that half hour to reading and homework each night ! Please take that time to sit with them and watch as they do their homework so that you can help if they need help and to make sure they are doing it correctly! Homework should be 100% correct each night.

In reading we have been reading many stories all about "Being Me". We have talked a lot about ourselves and how it is OK to be who we are and how it is OK to be different and still be friends. We have read The Mixed Up Chameleon, Frog and Toad, and Wilson Sat Alone. We have been working on story elements, such as title, author, setting, problem, solution, beginning, middle, end, and author's message or lesson. We have also been working on comparing and contrasting different character point of views.

In writing we have been writing about being alone, doing things with our families, and free writing. We are also writing about our weekends on Monday mornings and writing letters to you on Friday's telling you about our week at school. We are working on making sure we have a topic sentence to start our story, capital letters, and punctuation.

In grammar we have talked about complete sentences, naming and telling parts, and punctuation marks.

In spelling we learned about digraphs (h brothers- ch, sh, th, wh), nasals (m, n, ng) and the floss rule (words that end in ff, ll, ss. Our 2nd test was today. Make sure your child is practicing reading and spelling their words each night so they are ready for the test every Friday.

Don't forget to also have your child practice reading and spelling their sight word list in their sight word envelope. They will get a new list when our mom/grandma helpers test them on their current list and they pass. Please keep this envelope in their homework folder each day!

In math we completed our first unit on  addition and subtraction to 20. We took a pretest before the unit started and a test at the end of the unit. I will send both home next week to see how much your child has learned.  This week we started our measurement unit. We have been measuring using our centimeters rulers. Ask your child how many centimeters are on a ruler (30).  Today we learned about the meter! Ask your child how many centimeters are in a meter (100).

Last Friday we met our kindergarten pen pals! We walked over to Verda Dierzen, met our new pen pals, and made a book with them. Here are some pictures.....
